Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano

Polly Boissevain has been volunteering at the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano since 2007. Polly is part of the Friday Boxing Team that boxes up canned goods and staple items for two programs. One program is
Food for Children, which distributes boxes of food monthly to families with children between the ages of 4 and 5 years old. This food helps to fill the gap for families with children who are too old for the federal assistance
program Women Infants and Children (WIC), and still too young for school lunch programs. The other program the Friday Boxing Team supports is Extra Helpings, a program to provide food boxes to chronically ill people.

During a 3-4 hour session, the Friday Boxing Team packs anywhere from 250 to 1,000 boxes with 25 to 30 food items each. It is a highly orchestrated and elaborate set up with food on pallets, carts with boxes, and a skid at the back to weigh boxes and stack them on pallets.
