As part of the City of Santa Rosa’s Emergency Groundwater Supply Program, West Yost worked with a well redevelopment contractor to rehabilitate the City’s 10-year old test well at the A Place to Play Park.
Rehabilitation included:
- Video inspection and initial pump test
- Swabbing and brushing
- Chlorination
- Airlift redevelopment
- Pumping redevelopment
- Final pump test and video inspection
The potential yield of the well increased substantially following the redevelopment work. West Yost also prepared well equipping plans and technical specifications to convert the test well into an emergency well. Well equipping included installing a submersible pump, split face block building, tablet chlorination system, plus site work and fencing. The project’s goal was to install the greatest pump capacity to fit into the 8-inch diameter test well.
One project challenge was the high visibility of the test well site, at the west entrance to A Place-to-Play park. West Yost worked with City Water, Public Works, and Recreation and Parks staff to develop architectural features suitable to the location.

“I get jazzed by taking data we collect and telling a story in maps and figures that illustrates to an every-day user what we learned. I get tremendous satisfaction from creating well-crafted images from dense spreadsheets of raw data. For example, for the Colusa project because we
gotstarted with a pile of data and we turned it into maps in a large report that told a story for stakeholders and the general public. It makes the information approachable and understandable.
One of my most rewarding efforts was for the City of Modesto’s Grogan Park Municipal Supply Well. It’s cool to put a big pipe in the ground and get water out of it! It worked exactly as intended, we got clean water at the volume they needed. After that, the City asked us to support them by doing two more projects, the Del Rio Well and Replacement Well 229. They were very happy with all three projects.”

“I enjoy working with our clients and developing an internal West Yost team that can provide the solutions each client needs. We have the right resources on the Groundwater team. Our strength is that in addition to hydrogeology we have the ability to draw upon many internal resources for civil and mechanical engineering. We also have a pool of experts with whom we have built long, trusted relationships for whatever water needs arise. I find it rewarding to work with our clients to develop the best, customized team for each project.
I am proud of working on multidisciplinary teams to meet the variety of project needs for our longstanding clients, such as the City of Modesto. We are able to meet their needs at any moment. We have provided a variety of planning, modeling, design, and construction management services for several departments, including water and wastewater services, over a long period of time. I enjoy the fact that what I do related to groundwater is part of a bigger picture for their water and wastewater services. They have provided us with excellent feedback and appreciated our performance. I have also conducted three different well trainings for City of Modesto, in addition to AWWA and City of Redding.”
